Does Vicroads require me to have driving lessons?
- No. To be eligible to sit your VicRoads drive test there is no current requirement for driving lessons.
Should I have some driving lessons when I'm just starting out?
- It depends on the confidence and ability of the learner. Some learners have had previous driving experience (motorbikes, tractors etc...) and some learners have not.
- It also depends on the confidence of the supervisor. Some supervisors are capable and confident in allowing their learner into the drivers seat. They are confident in their ability to instruct and control the vehicle if required. Some supervisors prefer their learner to have a few lessons to get them started. Lessons are conducted in a "dual control" car with a professional driving instructor which is a safe environment for them to learn.
What are the benifits of driving lessons?
- Driving instructors are professionals that enable learning to driving in a safe environment. They are trained to control the vehicle in case of emergency with "dual control" vehicles. Dual controls allows the instuctor to BRAKE, ACCELERATE and operate the CLUTCH (in manual vehicles). They can basically drive the car from the passenger seat!
- All driving instructors must hold a current "driving instructor authority" (DIA) to enable them to instruct learners for a fee. This should be displayed in the instructors vehicle. Please ensure your instructor is licensed by asking to view their DIA licence.
- Aside for the regular "3 point turns" and "Reverese Parallel Parking" Driving Instructors can teach vehicle control, observation skills, Road rules, Tips & Techinues to develop good driving habits and prepare for SOLO driving.
